A vector tile package (.vtpk) is a collection of vector tiles and style resources that are stored on a server. Vector tiles contain vector representations of data across a range of scales. Unlike raster tiles, they can adapt to the resolution of the display device and even be customized for multiple uses. When you publish a vector tile package to ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise, a vector tile layer is created. The vector tile layer can be added to web maps as operational or basemap layers or maps in ArcGIS Pro. To customize the look of the tiles without re-generating them, you can make style changes such as turning on and off individual feature layers and changing colors and symbols by modifying a style file that is created and delivered with the vector tile layer.
A vector tile package is created from a map (or a basemap) with the Create Vector Tile Package tool. This file can then be uploaded to ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise and used to create a vector tile service.
Create a vector tile package
- Author a multiscaled map. For more information, see Author a multiscaled map and Author a map for vector tile creation.
- Create a vector tile package (.vtpk) using the Create Vector Tile Package tool.
- Share the vector tile package to ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise using the Share Package tool.
