When performing pipeline maintenance, sometimes a section of a pipe is taken out of the ground and is replaced by a new pipe. This process is known as pipe replacement.
During pipe replacement, events on an edited section of a route can be left as is, retired, or retired and replaced according to an event replacement configuration.
Event layers must be categorized on the Configure Replace Events dialog box before event replacement. The measures for the route do not change during event replacement.
Event replacement scenario
The configuration of event replacement requires categorizing the events in the feature service into three categories: As Is, Retire, and Retire and Replace.
Tip:
Point events can only be categorized using Retire.
Before event replacement
The following diagram illustrates a pipeline section before replacement:
Pipeline events before replacement are shown.
Before replacement, the pipe section has eight events, three point events (events 1-3) and five linear events (events 4-8).

A pipe with measures from 0 to 10 exists. Various line and point events are present in the pipe as shown above.
During inspection, it was determined that a section of the pipe between the measures 0 and 5 needs to be replaced on 12/31/2017, as shown below.
The section of the pipe to be replaced and affected events are shown.
The events are placed in the following event replacement categories:

Categorize events
Complete the following steps to configure event replacement:
In ArcGIS Pro, open the map that contains the feature service in which events will be retired or replaced.
On the Location Referencing tab, in the Events group, click Configure Replacement.
The Configure Replace Events dialog box appears.
If no event replacement configuration exists, the Create New Replace Events dialog box appears on top of the Configure Replace Events dialog box where you can create a named configuration.
Tip:
All the line events and point events available in the map feature service are listed in the Event Layers list.
Press the Shift key and click to select a range of events, or press the Ctrl key and click to select events out of order; then drag multiple line events from the Event Layers list to the Retire Events list.
You can also use the arrow buttons on the dialog box to move selected layers between the Event Layers list and other lists or to move line event layers up and down between the Retire Events and Retire and Replace Events lists.
Tip:
Click Reset to set the configuration to its original or last saved state.
Event layers that remain in the Event Layers list are left as is when event replacement is run.
Press the Shift key and click to select a range of events, or press the Ctrl key and click to select events out of order; then drag multiple line events from the Event Layers list to the Retire and Replace Events list.
Tip:
Only line events can be retired and replaced.
Note:
If no events are configured to retire or to retire and replace, you can't save the configuration.
Optionally, click the arrow for any event layer in the Retire and Replace Events list to expand it.
An expanded list of editable event layer fields appears. Uncheck a check box to exclude it from the event replacement.
If default attribute values are configured, they are shown. Default values can be overwritten when using the Replace Events pane for event replacement.
Note:
Some attribute fields are required attribute fields . A required attribute field is a nonnullable field with no default value. The check box for a required attribute field cannot be unchecked.
Click Save to save the event replacement configuration.
Note:
The event replacement configuration is saved to a folder at the path specified for Replace Events Folder Location. This folder location is the same as the active project's ArcGIS Pro project folder by default.
