The 3D roof construction tools add a roof to a selected multipatch or 3D object feature. The tools are available on the multipatch toolbar when a 3D multipatch or 3D object feature is edited with the Edit Vertices tool .
When you add a roof to a multipatch or 3D object feature, consider the following:
- The base of a roof can start on the selected feature or extrude to the active surface.
- To remove a roof, explode the feature, and delete the faces comprising the roof using the Select tool and Delete command on the Edit ribbon tab. Next, merge the remaining faces into a single multipatch or 3D object feature.
- The multipatch toolbar also appears with the Create 3D Geometry tool that is available with editing templates for 3D source layers.
Create a flat roof
The Flat Roof tool creates a roof consisting of one top section that can be used to represent flat or shed roofs.
To add a flat roof to an existing multipatch or 3D object feature, complete the following steps:
- Open a scene containing the multipatch or 3D object feature you are editing.
Alternatively, add the layer containing the feature to the active scene.
- Configure settings for editing.
Specify which layers can be edited, confirm that the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and enable the snap agents that allow you to work effectively with the multipatch or 3D object features you are editing.
- On the Edit ribbon tab, click Modify in the Features group.
The Modify Features pane appears.
- Click the Edit Vertices tool .
To find the tool, expand Reshape, or type Vertices in the Search text box.
The Edit Vertices tool appears in the pane.
- Click the Select a feature tool , and select the multipatch or 3D object feature.
If features are currently selected, the selection tool displays Change the selection.
To refine the selection in the selection view, right-click a feature and click Unselect or Only Select This .
The multipatch toolbar appears when only one feature is selected.
- Click the Flat Roof tool .
- Hover over a top edge of the vertical face where the base of the roof starts.
- Click the edge when the orange extension line and control handle appear.
A roof with default dimensions appears at the top of the feature and displays a 3D handle.
- Drag the 3D handle to adjust the height of the roof.
- To extrude the base of the roof downward to the active surface, click and enable Extrude Roof on the toolbar.
Click and disable this setting to start the base of the roof on the clicked edge.
- Click Finish on the toolbar, or press the F2 key to add the roof and finish the feature.
Create a gable roof
The Gable Roof tool creates a roof consisting of two sloped sides that connect at a top ridge.
To add a gable roof to an existing multipatch or 3D object feature, complete the following steps:
- Open a scene containing the multipatch or 3D object feature you are editing.
Alternatively, add the layer containing the feature to the active scene.
- Configure settings for editing.
Specify which layers can be edited, confirm that the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and enable the snap agents that allow you to work effectively with the multipatch or 3D object features you are editing.
- On the Edit ribbon tab, click Modify in the Features group.
The Modify Features pane appears.
- Click the Edit Vertices tool .
To find the tool, expand Reshape, or type Vertices in the Search text box.
The Edit Vertices tool appears in the pane.
- Click the Select a feature tool , and select the multipatch or 3D object feature.
If features are currently selected, the selection tool displays Change the selection.
To refine the selection in the selection view, right-click a feature and click Unselect or Only Select This .
The multipatch toolbar appears when only one feature is selected.
- Click the Gable Roof tool .
- Hover over the top edge of the vertical face where the base of the roof starts.
- Click the edge when the orange extension line and control handle appear.
A roof with default dimensions appears at the top of the feature and displays a 3D handle.
- Drag the 3D handle to adjust the height of the roof.
- To extrude the base of the roof downward to the active surface, click and enable Extrude Roof on the toolbar.
Click and disable this setting to start the base of the roof on the clicked edge.
- Click Finish on the toolbar, or press the F2 key to add the roof and finish the feature.
Create a hip roof
The Hip Roof tool creates a roof consisting of slopes at all edges that connects at one or more top ridges.
To add a hip roof to an existing multipatch or 3D object feature, complete the following steps:
- Open a scene containing the multipatch or 3D object feature you are editing.
Alternatively, add the layer containing the feature to the active scene.
- Configure settings for editing.
Specify which layers can be edited, confirm that the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and enable the snap agents that allow you to work effectively with the multipatch or 3D object features you are editing.

Create a mansard roof
The Mansard Roof tool creates a gambrel-style hip roof with two slopes.
To add a mansard roof to an existing multipatch or 3D object feature, complete the following steps:
- Open a scene containing the multipatch or 3D object feature you are editing.
Alternatively, add the layer containing the feature to the active scene.
- Configure settings for editing.
Specify which layers can be edited, confirm that the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and enable the snap agents that allow you to work effectively with the multipatch or 3D object features you are editing.
- On the Edit ribbon tab, click Modify in the Features group.

- Hover over the top edge of the vertical face where the base of the roof starts.

A roof with default dimensions appears at the top of the feature and displays a vertical and horizontal 3D handle.
- Drag the vertical handle to adjust the height of the roof, and drag the horizontal handle to adjust the size of the top face.
- To add a second slope, click the top face of the roof, and drag the horizontal and vertical axis handles to specify the slope and height, respectively.
- To extrude the base of the roof downward to the active surface, click and enable Extrude Roof on the toolbar.
Click and disable this setting to start the base of the roof on the clicked edge.
- Click Finish on the toolbar, or press the F2 key to add the roof and finish the feature.
Create a dome roof
The Dome Roof tool creates a circular or elliptical arch that is rotated 360 degrees.
To create a dome roof, complete the following steps:
- Open a scene containing the multipatch or 3D object feature you are editing.
Alternatively, add the layer containing the feature to the active scene.
- Configure settings for editing.
Specify which layers can be edited, confirm that the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and enable the snap agents that allow you to work effectively with the multipatch or 3D object features you are editing.
- On the Edit ribbon tab, click Modify in the Features group.

- Click the Edit Vertices tool .
