Verify ArcGIS IPS coverage

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the ArcGIS IPS extension.

To ensure optimal performance of indoor positioning, it is recommended that you verify the coverage of a positioning dataset before creating an IPS-aware map. To verify the coverage of an indoor positioning dataset, complete the following steps:

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Open or create a floor-aware map or scene of your managed facilities.
  3. Add the IPS Positioning Datasets feature class to the map.
  4. Browse the map to identify the IPS Positioning Dataset feature you want to verify, visualize its attributes, and note its name.
  5. Add the IPS Positioning Points feature class to the map and enable floor awareness.
  6. Create a definition query on the IPS Positioning Points layer and add a clause on the DATASET_NAME field to match the name of the dataset you are verifying.
  7. Use the floor filter to browse through the facilities and levels on the map ensuring that the IPS Positioning Points feature class fully covers the required areas.
  8. Note:

Each IPS positioning point includes a z-value, which represents elevation at a specific location. This value enables the visualization of indoor positioning coverage in a 3D scene.

Troubleshoot ArcGIS IPS coverage

If ArcGIS IPS coverage is not performing as expected, review the data used to generate the Indoor Positioning Dataset. The steps vary based on the generation method:

  • For survey-less IPS: Ensure that the IPS Areas match the expected coverage and that IPS Beacons are properly distributed across the area.
  • For survey-based IPS: Verify that the survey IPS Recordings completely cover the intended IPS area.

If no issues are found in the features, confirm that all input features were used by the Generate Indoor Positioning Dataset tool. The tool discards any input features that fail verification before running and generates warning messages. Review these warnings and follow the provided instructions to correct the input data. Once the data is corrected or replaced with valid data, rerun the Generate Indoor Positioning Dataset tool.
