You can use keyboard shortcuts to perform certain actions in the map or layout Contents pane. The following table lists the available shortcuts and what they do in the Contents pane.

Ctrl and click an expansion control; Hyphen (-) or Ctrl+Left arrow key | Collapse selected items. If a single item is selected, all items at the selected hierarchical level are collapsed. |
Left arrow key | Collapse last selected item. |
Ctrl and click an expansion control; Plus sign (+) or Ctrl+Right arrow key | Expand selected items. If a single item is selected, all items at the selected hierarchical level are expanded. |
Right arrow key | Expand last selected item. |
Ctrl+Shift and click an expansion control; Ctrl+Shift+Plus sign (+) or Hyphen (-); or Ctrl+Shift+Left arrow key or Right arrow key | Expand or collapse all items at all hierarchical levels. |
Spacebar | Turn on or off selected layers. |
Ctrl+Spacebar | Turn on or off all items at that hierarchical level in the Contents pane. If the selected layer is part of a group layer or a composite layer, all the members of that layer will be turned on or off. If multiple layers are selected, Ctrl+Spacebar works the same as Spacebar and turns only the selected layers on or off. |
Ctrl and click a check box | Turn on or off all selected items. If a single item is selected, all items at the selected hierarchical level are turned off. |
Ctrl+Shift and click a check box | Turn on or off all selected items. If a single item is selected, turn on or off all items at all hierarchical levels. |
Alt and click a check box | Turn off all layers except the one whose check box you clicked at the current hierarchical level. |
Alt+Shift and click a check box | Turn off all layers except the one whose check box you clicked at all hierarchical levels, including group layer contents. |
F2 | Rename the selected item. |
Enter | Open the Properties dialog box for a selected item. |
Ctrl and click one or more items | Select any items in the Contents pane drawing order. If a group sublayer is clicked, all previously selected layers are cleared. |
Shift and click two or more items | Select everything between the selected items in the Contents pane drawing order. If a group layer's contents are inside the selection, any selected items outside the group layer are cleared. |
Ctrl+L | When a layout is the active view, lock or unlock the item selected in the Contents pane. |
Ctrl+Shift+L | When a layout is the active view, lock or unlock all items at the selected hierarchical level in the Contents pane. |
Alt and click a layer's name | Zoom to the extent of that layer. |
Delete | Delete the item selected in the Contents pane. |
Ctrl+T | Open the table of the layer or table selected in the Contents pane. |
Click a map and press any number or letter | Select the next item in the Contents pane that starts with the pressed number or letter. |
Ctrl+Q | If a query layer is selected, open the Edit Query Layer dialog box. |
