Create IPS areas

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the ArcGIS IPS extension.

IPS areas represent the indoor spaces where you want to enable indoor positioning. These areas must be defined as polygon features and can be created by either selecting features from the ArcGIS Indoors Units feature class or by manually drawing polygon features.

To create IPS areas by selecting from the Indoors Units feature class, complete the following steps:

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Open the map you have created for IPS enablement or create a new one.
  3. Ensure that the Units feature classes are added to the map.
  4. On the Map tab, in the Selection group, click Select By Attributes Select By Attributes to open the Select Layer By Attribute geoprocessing tool.
  5. On the Select Layer By Attribute tool dialog box, for the Input Rows parameter, choose the Units feature.
  6. For the Selection type field, choose New Selection.
  7. Enter a query expression and select the Use Type for the units you want to include in your IPS areas.

Common choices often include navigable spaces like corridors, atriums, and lobbies.

  8. Click OK to run the selection query.
  9. You can visually verify that the selected Units satisfy your requirements for the areas where you want to enable ArcGIS IPS.

Export selected features

While you can directly utilize the Units feature class with an active selection as your IPS_Areas, it may be more convenient to export the selected features into a new feature class named IPS_Areas. To do so, after applying a selection (as mentioned above), complete the following steps:

  1. Right-click the Units feature class, navigate to Data and select Export Features.

    The Export features window appears.

  2. Ensure that the toggle indicating the selected records is enabled.
  3. Choose IPS_Areas as a name for the Output Feature Class.
  4. Click OK.

If you are manually defining IPS areas, ensure that the polygons are created in a feature class that includes the LEVEL_ID attribute, adhering to the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model. Additionally, follow the guidelines for creating floor-aware features. Ensure that you define an IPS area feature for every level where you want to enable indoor positioning.
