Share a web map

With ArcGIS Pro, you can share your maps as web maps to your active portal. A web map is an interactive display of geographic information you can use to tell stories and answer questions. Web maps are composed of web layers. In ArcGIS Pro, you can author your map with existing web layers or with data layers that are shared as web layers when you share your web map. Web maps can be opened in ArcGIS Pro as well as in standard web browsers.

To share a web map, you must have the following:

  • An account that is part of an ArcGIS organization with the privilege to create content.
  • If your map contains feature layers or raster layers, new web layers are shared when you share your map as a web map. In this case, your account must also have privileges to publish web layers.

You can continue to work with ArcGIS Pro while your sharing job is processing. You can even close ArcGIS Pro. You can monitor the status of your sharing job in the Job Status pane.

Share a web map using a chosen configuration

When you share a web map, you provide required item details, choose a configuration, choose a portal location, and set sharing properties. The configuration you choose determines the types of web layers that are created with the web map and their default properties. You can change some of these properties if you configure the web map.

  1. Open a map.
  2. On the ribbon, click the Share tab. In the Share As group, click Web Map New Web Map.

The Share As Web Map pane appears.

  3. Accept the default name or provide a new name for the web map.

The default name is the name of your ArcGIS Pro map.

  4. Optionally, complete the Summary and Tags fields.

A summary and tags are required when sharing to an ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9 or earlier portal.

You can enter a maximum of 128 tags.

  5. Choose a configuration for your web map.

Depending on your active portal, different configurations are available. If you share to an ArcGIS Enterprise portal, there are configurations that reference registered data and configurations that copy data to the server. If you share to ArcGIS Online, there are only configurations that copy data to the server.

    Note:

The Reference registered data configurations create web layers that reference registered data sources. Any subsequent updates to those data sources are reflected in their corresponding web layers. The Copy all data configurations copy the source data for all layers in the map (including layers that reference registered data sources) to the server. For more information about working with registered data, see Manage registered data stores.

The configurations are described in the following table:

    Reference registered data: Exploratory

Map layers are shared as a dynamically rendered map image layer. This interactive map supports querying and is ideal for displaying regularly updated data.

This configuration is not available when sharing to ArcGIS Online.

    Reference registered data: Editable

Map layers are shared as a dynamically rendered map image layer. Any feature layers in the map are also shared as an editable feature layer. This editable map is ideal for enterprise editing workflows, as the web layers honor data sources registered with the federated server.

This configuration is not available when sharing to ArcGIS Online.

    Reference registered data: Visualization

Map layers are shared as a cached map image layer to support fast visualization. This map also supports querying.

This configuration is not available when sharing to ArcGIS Online.

    Copy all data: Exploratory

Feature layers are shared as a web feature layer with editing turned off. Other map layers are shared as tile layers.

    Copy all data: Editable

Feature layers are shared as a web feature layer with editing turned on. Other map layers are shared as tile layers. This editable map is ideal for collecting data from users who do not have access to your enterprise data.

    Copy all data: Visualization

Map layers are shared as a tile layer to support fast visualization. These web maps make ideal basemaps.

  6. Optionally, check the Use symbol types compatible with all clients check box to convert ArcGIS Pro symbols to web symbols that can be rendered by all applications, including most older clients.

When the box is unchecked, 2D point, line, and polygon symbols are preserved as ArcGIS Pro symbols, also known as Esri Cartographic Information Model (CIM) symbols. Alternate symbols used in the map are also preserved. Uncheck the check box if your web map will be used in newer client applications that support rendering CIM symbols, such as ArcGIS API for JavaScript 4.x. CIM symbols appear downgraded in older clients, such as Map Viewer Classic.

If your map contains data layers that will be shared as a web feature layer, this setting is directly applied to the web feature layer. For example, checking the check box automatically enables the Use symbol types compatible with all clients option for the web feature layer. The symbols of data layers are stored with the web layers that are published when the web map is shared. If you change the symbols of existing web layers, these changes are stored with the web map.

This option is checked by default when sharing to ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 or earlier.

This option does not appear when sharing to ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8 or earlier. For these portal versions, ArcGIS Pro symbols are automatically converted to web symbols.

  7. Optionally, click the Folder drop-down arrow and choose a folder in your portal content to store the web map.

By default, the web map and any new web layers that are created with the web map are stored at the root level of your portal content.

  8. Under Sharing Level, specify how the web map will be shared:
    • Owner—Only the owner (and organization members with privileges to view content owned by other members) can access the item. This is the default option.
    • Organization—Share your content with all authenticated users in your organization. This option is available when you are signed in with an organizational account.
    • Everyone (public)—Share your content with the public. Anyone can access and see it.
    1. Optionally, under Groups, select groups to which you belong to share your content with their members.
    Tip:

If your map includes existing web layers, ensure the Sharing Level settings for those layers are as inclusive as the Sharing Level setting of the web map. Otherwise, the existing web layers may not be accessible when the web map is opened in Map Viewer. The sharing properties of existing web layers can be viewed and changed in your portal.

  9. Optionally, click the Configuration tab at the top of the pane to see the web layers that will be created when you share the map or change their properties.

See Configure a web map for more information.

If you enabled the Allow assignment of unique numeric IDs for sharing web layers option on the Map Properties dialog box, assigned IDs appear for each sublayer. To change an ID, click the number next to the layer or table. On the Layer Properties or Standalone Table Properties dialog box, on the General tab, type a custom integer ID in the Layer ID or Table ID text box. For more information, see Assign layer IDs.

  10. Under Finish Sharing, click Analyze Identify potential performance bottlenecks and errors to review for potential problems.

Errors and warnings are listed on the Messages tab. Right-click a message to open its help topic or take corrective action in the software. Errors Error must be resolved before you can share your GIS resource. Resolving warnings Warning is recommended but not required.

  11. After you have resolved errors, and optionally resolved warnings, click Share Share to share the web map.

If the sharing settings have changed, the Update Sharing dialog box may appear where you can ensure that the layers are visible to your intended viewers.

    1. On the Update Sharing dialog box, click Update to adjust the layer sharing settings to make the layers visible in the web map.

A message appears if one or more editable web feature layers cannot be shared with everyone. You must approve public data collection from the layer's item page on the portal. For more information, see Allow or prevent editing on public layers.

  12. Once the web map has been successfully shared, click the Manage web map link at the bottom of the pane to manage the web map in your portal.

If the web map is composed of web layers cached automatically on the server, the layers may not be viewable while cache generation is in progress. Click Jobs Open Job Status Pane to view the cache status in the Job Status pane.

Considerations when sharing to older portals

Although web maps can be shared to any portal, not all functionality is supported in every version of Portal for ArcGIS. The following are limitations when sharing to older versions:

  • ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8 and earlier—The Use symbol types compatible with all clients option is not available.
  • Portal for ArcGIS 10.4.1 and earlier—The Reference registered data: Visualization configuration is not available.
  • Portal for ArcGIS 10.3.1 and earlier
    • The Reference registered data: Exploratory configuration is not available.

    • The Reference registered data: Editable configuration is not available.
